Did You Hear About The Blogger Who Cut Her Hair?

She went from these rich, silky waves brushing her collarbone

Cute look, but done to death!

to sleek strands hugging her jawline

So Fresh & So Clean

And she fell in love with herself all over again.

Shout out to Nina's stylist Katy for making me look brand-spanking-new. Y'all might want to keep your husbands on a tighter leash until my hair starts to grow out.

What Had Happened Was...:Catching Up With The Jaded Empire

Howdy folks! Just wanted to give a shout out to your patience given my impromptu blog vacation last week, but as always it was necessary. I'm in the middle of restructuring my priorities and trying to fit things into my life, and last week that meant blogging had to take a back seat. You understand.

Anyfucks, here's what's been going on:

1- I finally had my visit with an allergist (keep your mangy cats & dust mites FAR AWAY from me!) and the MRI of my lower back & spine. Child, first of all WHY ARE MRIs SO LOUD? YOU SEE HOW I'M TYPING? THAT'S HOW LOUD IT IS INSIDE THAT CREEPY COFFIN-LIKE CONTRAPTION. LOUD. AS FUCK. Second, I need the ENT folks to understand that I cannot fill my Rx for Flonase because I can't find my Rx card, and I keep calling the Union office for a replacement but their offices were damaged in the hurricane and they're currently milking that excuse dry and NOT answering phones. So no, Dr. Song, I've not taken the Flonase yet. Stop asking.

Finally, I cannot explain to you the torture that it is to sit in a chair with all of these concentrated droplets of allergens all up and down your arm for fifteen goddamn minutes while the doc waits for your skin to react. You know when my skin reacted? Right the fuck away. But I still had to sit for fifteen minutes and not move or scratch or anything. Added bonus? I got to walk around for the next couple of days with my arms all swollen and marked up. THANKS! His recommendation? Encase everything in my room to keep the dust mites away, steer clear of cats and, oh yeah, get a flu shot for the next zillion years of your life. Bitch, have several seats because NO on that last one.

2- My hair is still straight. I thought you'd want an update. I've been able to go over a month with it straight and my edges have hung in there for the duration. It helps that every week or so I add a little olive oil (yes, from my kitchen) into my strands, and that I pick it up every night and wear a scarf when I can (even though it comes off five minutes after I've gotten into bed. "S'okay. She'll be back..." I'm still trying to find a way to make my hair not smell so...natural O_o. I mean, after a month and a half of not washing it, the freshness is definitely gone. Luckily for me, there isn't anyone all up in my hair follicles anymore so I only marginally care.

But as of right now I'm trying to find ways of not mimicking my hipster nemeses and de-funk my hair until my next salon visit. And YES I know I could just go more often but TIME is MONEY and also MONEY is MONEY and well, that's even more scarce than my time.

3- There will be no Jaded Birthday festivities in NYC this year. Take a minute and let that soak in. I'm going to go away on a much-deserved trip to a place where the sun shines bright all day, every day, and I'm going to soak in all of that wonderful Vitamin D--probably while laying in a floaty in the ocean--and not think twice about it. There will be slinky bathing suits. There will be sexy dancing with hot and sexy men. I will give out fake names and phone numbers. And I will eat as if it's my last day on earth. All of these things are on deck because I deserve it and I'm worth it. IF you're super sad about me not having a birthday party, though, you could always just throw me a fabulous gala. I'll even promise to show up!

4- I am absolutely focused on my writing (so far) this year. Last year I was obsessed with my health and my fitness and whether or not Zoe was going to choose George or Wade, but I was really just hiding from my own work. I've started meeting with my writers group again to motivate each other and workshop our pieces, and I feel good about it. I'm going to clean up all of my unpublished pieces, send them out and find them a sweet literary home. I've been reworking a story into a format and voice that I believe works best and it's very exciting to see my word blobs become more and more coherent.

I've been mingling with other writers and event organizers and am making myself more visible. I still have to work on my social graces and actually TALK when I mingle but listen--Rome wasn't built in a day. I have to ease into this new social butterfly role, OK? DON'T RUSH ME! Also, expect more events from me. I'm just going to keep having them until you show up to one. YOU WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO SHOW UP TO ONE, DAMMIT.

5- I'm mentally and physically and logistically preparing for the shift taking place in my family real soon: K is going off to college in the fall and N is becoming more active in extracurricular activities. This means I'm either away from home more--chauffeuring Miss N all over Brooklyn--or I'm home more because there's no one to watch N anymore. It's not so terrible (so far) seeing as I don't go out as much as I used to, and nights when I have to because of networking events or readings, I'm confident she'll either be fine on her own or will just come with me. Fuck it- why not? It'll be like Take Your Daughter to Work Day only at night and in seedy bars...wait, let me rethink that...

So, hookers, what have YOU been doing?

*smooches...shocked that I had time to write this*
---------
actually, I stole the time from some other important shit that needed to get done. I'm still working on that prioritizing...

My Hair Is LAID...

Found my old HS ID card. Of all the things I did this weekend, coming across this card in an old wallet was the only thing I saw fit to report on.

The photo, ladies and gentlemen of the internets, is freaking AWESOME. Look at that blazer, son! And the silver hoops? You couldn't tell me SHIT.

Back then I was BIG on wearing silky dress shirts, men's sport jackets and baggy jeans, loads of silver jewelry and big Dominican hair. WHATCHU KNOW ABOUT THAT??

That's a FRESH Dominican blowout, my dude!

Get into it!

Sometimes I Miss...

...being pregnant. Something about having that massive, solid belly upon which I could rest things (plates, books, etc) was so comforting. I mean, up until the eighth month when all you want is to reach in and rip that rumbly-tumbly child out yourself.

...having long hair. It wasn't too long ago but I miss having it hang down my back. I miss whipping it around on the dance floor during heavy metal sets at a dive bar.

...that day. That age. That close-knit family that saw each other all the time and spent every summer and school holiday together. And that woman, especially.

...these wittle baby fwaces!

...Dominican house parties: too much food, music busting out your eardrums, half-drunk Heineken bottles everywhere and inappropriate dancing with grabby dudes (well, maybe not that last part).

Promises...And Other Musings

Good weekend? Yeah? Me kinda, too.

New Favorite Product
Two weekends ago Eb the Celeb DRAGGED me to a speed dating event. Yes, DRAGGED. Y'all know me- that's not how I roll. But she's my girl and was supporting her friend Kel Spencer so I couldn't say no to that. We're all in the struggle and I'm down for helping. After the event (no...I didn't meet anyone with whom I cared to keep in touch) we got goody bags that included samples of shampoo & conditioner, a brand I had never heard of called Perfect Results.

On Thursday I washed Ks hair with it and OH. MY. GOD. It made her hair so soft and shiny. Even SHE noticed the difference. I didn't get a chance to press it so I don't know what it looks like when completely straight, but blown out it was amazing. Now, we've only used the shampoo & conditioner so I can't speak on any of the other products, but next time I'm at Ricky's I will be looking for this line of hair care, for sure!

Get Ready To Take Notes Tonight
It's been a hot minute since we've had a Parenting 101 segment on Monday Musings so what better time than the present.

On tonight's show we will focus on siblings, your child's/children's education and of course, discipline. Bring your notebooks and your questions; this WILL be on the final.

Promises
Once when I visited Mari in DC, we went to see the Jim Henson exhibit at the museum and I picked up the cutest little book, It's Not Easy Being Green.

I only sort of read through it until this weekend and I came across a quote that spoke to me:

"I guess I was wrong when I said I never promised anyone. I promised me." -Kermit

Friday I explained to you about my issues with follow-thru and this speaks to that. I usually only finish something if someone else is counting on me, but when it's for me I slack off. My thesis, my novel, getting my money in order, organizing my apartment, getting in shape, being open to new dating experiences, abstaining from certain vices- all promises I made to myself that were laid to the wayside just because. Sad but true. This is something I've decided to work on during 2010 for sure.

I've really got to learn to put myself first sometimes. It's so hard for me but if I can enforce my "NO" policy a little bit more when asked to do something for others I think it can happen.

Someone Take My Gmail Away
While watching last week's episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine, in which she asked her ex-husband for his sperm in order to have another baby, I got the BRIGHT idea to ask C the same thing.

1- I'd like to give a huge side eye to all my Twitter friends who did NOT stop me from sending such a crazy email and

2- I especially want to give The F$%k-It List the side eye for claiming that C is still in love with me. HE'S SO NOT!

That said...he agreed to it. And yes, I died a hundred deaths when I received his reply.

Let's clarify. What I asked was:
What if on the brink of menopause I wanted another baby...would you donate your sperm? That way all the kids have the same parents. Yes? No?

And he replied:
I guess I would. I mean I still care about you and would want to help out if that was something you wanted. I'm sure it would lessen the anxiety the girls would have.

So I don't think he's in love with me...he's just a good friend. Right? RIGHT?

LORD if his fiance didn't hate me before...

*smooches...wondering how much it costs to freeze my eggs*
----------
let's face it, folks, it's not such a crazy idea. think about it- my kids would all have the same dad and I won't have to worry about what the kid will look like and I already know he's a good dad. wait- did I just talk myself into it??? *dead*

"Pelo Numero 7"

But before we get to it, you know I always like to serenade y'all with some welcome back music. Usually it's my boy Ludacris, but for some reason I've been rockin this Monica oldie but goodie a lot lately:

*walks it out all over your monitor*

OK, back to the show...

So I finally saw Chris Rock's documentary film "Good Hair." And even though I'm hella late I decided it's worth a live conversation on Monday Musings, with co-host Smarty P. Jones.

Why? I'll tell you right now...

When I was a little girl, I had long, thick, wavy hair. Every Sunday my mom would take HOURS UPON HOURS to wash it using a product line by a woman called Mirta de Perales. The products included this oil you had to soak your hair in for like an hour, a milk-based shampoo, conditioner and a rinse. THEN I had to sit for rollers and THEN I had to sit under the dryer for at least two hours.

FYI- We weren't church-going folks, clearly. HAIR was our religion I guess.

When I look back on my hair as a kid I think- I'd kill to have that back again; why'd my mom beat it into submission every week? My hair was AWESOME! And the best part of this story? My hair was considered "bad hair."

YUP. In my house it was labeled "pelo numero 7" which I suppose was some twisted code for nappy or something... who knows. It basically applied to anything that wasn't Caucaisian-like, or favoring the more European-looking of the Latinas in the family.

This was what I grew up with: thinking my hair wasn't good because it didn't lay flat even though it was so thick and healthy and long. And well-cared for. It was still "bad" in my family's eyes. Sad, right?

Even sadder? When I was 10yrs old, I went to DR for the summer, and my mom decided to hire a woman from our building to braid my hair. You know, so that my family would not have to worry about combing my "bad hair" while I was down there. I LOVED my braids soooo much, but when my aunts and grandparents saw this "black hairdo" they were none too pleased, and within a week they had me in the salon... GETTING A RELAXER. To say that my mom was pissed is an understatement.

From age 10-24 I was HOOKED on that creamy-crack like nobody's business. You couldn't tell me NOTHING about my freshly relaxed hair. In junior high school, some kids even dubbed me Ms. Clairol because of the fabulousness that was my hair. I lived and breathed for my next salon visit until, one day, the inevitable... my hair...was...falling...out. And on my 16th birthday I had to have a "big chop" to rid me of the damaged tresses. You would think I'd learn my lesson from that, right? but NOPE. I kept it up until I met Josie, my Dominican hairstylist, in 1998. She helped me break the habit.

God bless that woman because on my first visit to her salon she said to me, "You don't need a relaxer, I promise you. Just keep coming here and I will condition it and blow it out for you, and you will see that you will never need it again."

It took nearly 6yrs to rid myself of all the "processed hair" but Josie was right, and today a part of me wants to give my aunts a HUGE *side eye* for the trauma I suffered when my hair was falling out. It also fed my decision to keep my babies away from that lye-based hot ghetto mess. I think I made the right decision, too.

But listen, I'm not here to tell you what to do with YOUR hair, tho. I'm just telling you my side of the story, hoping you will tune in to the show tonight and join in on the conversation about what, exactly, is this "Good Hair" people keep speaking of... and why does it require us women of color putting such damaging chemicals so close to our delicate skin!

Football For Dummies...And Other Musings

Just stuff going on in my crazy mind...

Men In Uniform
Apparently, I get my penchant for servicemen from my mom. She was like a school girl asking for our picture to be taken with these dudes after Mari's Army 10-mile race back in October!

And clearly, even Colonial Uniforms are a turn on, too.

This Cake Never Stood A Chance...
...against two PMSing females and a 9-year-old with a bottomless pit for a stomach. Exhibit A:

was baked on Saturday night. The photo above is what it looked like on SUNDAY AFTERNOON. Help Us!

Football For Dummies
You all know that I am an avid beisbol fanatic that dabbles in football in the winter. But I have to say, I don't really understand the ins and out of the latter. I could easily step in for any umpire during a Mets game, but ask me to make a call during a football game and you'll hear crickets. So I figured it's time I get schooled on this game, since I find myself yelling at the computer monitor during game days.

So tonight on Monday Musings, blogger and compadre 12kyle of The 12th Planet will co-host seeing as he eats & breathes football like his life depends on it. (Quietly, I think it does!) If you don't want to be left out, make sure and tune in!!

Get A Haircut, Hippie!
I posted this pic on Twitter to both A) show off my locks and B) solicit sponsorship for a much needed visit to the hair salon for a haircut.

My ends are looking cat-raggedy... it refuses to hold a curl and gets all frizzy at the slightest hint of humidity... won't anyone sponsor a Jaded NYer today?!

Is There A Doctor In The House?

Right Now I Want...

...someone to come over here and handle this messy apartment for me. You ever have a mess so grandiose that you couldn't even fathom where to begin? That's where I am right now.

...Josie to come back to NYC and help me make some sense of my unruly tresses. You guys... I got so desperate I... I... I CUT IT MYSELF!! It was very traumatizing!

...more tango lessons. I stopped at three and now I find myself craving them from time to time. I need more tango lessons in my life.

...to wake up with all the answers I seek. I don't want to have to read any more books on the subject, or seek out any more spiritual centers, or harass the lyrics of my favorite songs to show me the way. I just want to KNOW.

...to hear these songs:

really loud and have a man- a REAL man- take me by the hand to the dance floor and mean it. I won't ever need sex so long as I can have a really great dance for once in my life.

...for my body, mind and soul to heal itself. I'm tired of being sick all the time. And besides, the rest of me is too busy anticipating the new fall line-up on TV to worry about my health.

...a jerk chicken patty with coco bread from the food stand on 165th Street & Jamaica Avenue. Oh my goodness- I can almost taste its spicy goodness! In fact, make that TWO patties...

...one entire carefree month in Santo Domingo, catching up with my family, lounging on the beach in La Romana, drinking fresh coconut water and ogling all the men I can't have because they might be my cousins.

...a do-over for April, May, June and July. I hate about 85% of the decisions I made in those months and would really appreciate another chance to get it right.

...to call a truce with The Voices. I'm not sure when it was that they became my nemeses, because in the beginning we were really good friends, and I want that old thing back. I want some peace among us.

*smooches...pretty sure I'm asking for too much*
----------
but quietly, I'd give up all these wants for JUST the jerk chicken patty. it's THAT GOOD!

Who Needs Manhattan, Anyway?

If my girl Lani didn't work in LES, I'd honestly never step foot in Manhattan on the weekends. Why? Because my side of the bridge has everything I could ever want.

This past weekend was another reminder of why I love Brooklyn so much, and why, despite my struggles to stay financially afloat, I can't see myself leaving. If I can make it here... you know the rest.

The Brooklyn Museum, which I just discovered has more than three floors of art (don't ask... I'm a spazz, I realize this. Can we please move on?), has a monthly (FREE!) event sponsored by Target called First Saturdays. It includes admission into the museum from 5-11PM to see the exhibits, maybe catch a book discussion or film, a "Hands-On" art project, live musicians and a dance party at the end of the night. Did I mention it was free? No? Well it's free. As in FREE.

This Saturday's band was Pistolera... a local group out of Williamsburg that I had the honor of interviewing last year. Love them... they rock, so please check them out. I also saw two amazing exhibits- one by Hernan Bas with some of the most beautifully provocative paintings I've seen in a long time and The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago in the Center for Feminist Art. So elaborate and just amazing... I mean so many different ways to illustrate the beauty of the female genitalia and the power we women have. Not just sexual powers but, Oh jeez, just check it out... I highly recommend both.

I think next time I may even attempt going to the fifth floor!!

After the museum there was a stop at a nice spot on Vanderbilt, Soda, where the DJ once again tore it up (even if he DID look like Lil John... WHAT? OKAY...) and my carefully styled Mixed Chicks coif quickly escalated into a certified Angela Davis 'FRO! But it's all good because I was in Brooklyn, where shit like that is the norm. As opposed to the chi-chi Manhattan clubs that expect you to wear shoes n shit. BOO!

(I will not get into the craziness that ensued that evening... you don't need to know that I may have drank more than I wanted to NOR do you need to know that gravity was not a friend of mine after 3AM. Oh, and you especially do not need to know who drove me home and what inappropriateness took place in said person's front seat in plain view of my neighbors. All of that is NUNYA!)

Sunday was another lovely day in the Slope; I had brunch at Cheryl's Global Soul (where the waiter had the cutest accent but gave LOUSY LOUSY service and saw his tip suffer because of it), did laundry (which really frightened and confused my clothes to no ends. Do you know how disturbing it is to see a shirt and some socks plead for their lives because they were not aware of what a washing machine was? Pure sadness) and then had a couple of margaritas at Caliente Cab Burrito Bar (oooh, go there and get EVERYTHING off the appetizer menu 'cause YUM!!!).

All in Brooklyn. All within 15 minutes of my apartment.

I mean really, why would I ever leave this place?

*smooches...loving my boro, even in the rain*
----------
and special shout out to ShellyShell who partook of this ALL BK WEEKEND with me; it's good to know people in the 'hood. next time, I'm gonna need ALL OF YOU to come out, mkay? Thanks!

Because I Promised Eb I Would...

...and she just reminded me...

I'm posting a few pictures of me from back in the day.

See, she posted this photo of her with this bow-tie hairdo, and I encouraged it, saying I'd also post something embarrassing from my teen years.

You know, when we all thought we were too cute for this planet but really looked a damn fool? Yeah, exactly.

So here it is, me at age 16, on my 16th birthday that was NOT a Sweet Sixteen because Mami and I couldn't see eye to eye on the party details so it was just us at Grandma and Papi's place in New Jersey.

See that TERRIBLE helmet hair I'm rocking? That was because my stylist at the time had to chop off all the damaged hair I had as a result of chemical relaxers. This picture reminds me to always and forever keep my and my babies' hair au natural!

And as a bonus, here's a pic I promised one of my Twitter friends of me and my fellow Menudo Fan Club Members. We were featured in the local Spanish-language newspaper because we had May birthdays. HOLLA!

See, I was torturing her with clips of Menudo and felt that, as retribution, I'd post this.

Now, sit back and enjoy this good laugh I brought you on this gloriously beautiful Sunday.

The Minna Street Players Present: West Side Story

I don't bake cookies (anymore); I'm not waiting for my kids when they get home from school (yet). I'm not involved in their schools and I don't care for play dates.

Instead, this is what passes for quality time at my house.

Sit back and enjoy the show...

Scene from West Side Story.WAV - The Minna Street Players

And did I mention I saw the Broadway revival of this classic musical

(Photos by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images North America)

with my sister from another mother, Lady Muireann of Bangs and a Bun...

...pictured here with her girl Linda, with a special appearance by my frizzy ass, caught-in-the-misty-rain hair.

Before my hair met up with the elements, it looked so cute, too. See here:

And here:

Either way, we saw West Side Story on Broadway, and Muireann and I had to concentrate hard on:

>not singing along or jumping on stage, and
>not ruining our eye make-up as we teared up when --SPOILER ALERT-- Chino shot Tony.

It was an absolutely amazing revival, complete with an actual Latino cast to play the Sharks and bi-lingual dialogue and songs. WOO HOO!!

So I didn't let my hair bother me too much. I looked totally cute- frizzy, but cute- and I think it's safe to say that we three were the baddest bitches at the Palace Theatre (where everyone else was wearing SWEAT PANTS!), at the Cajun place we went to afterwards (where the South American/Mexican busboys/kitchen help were undressing me with their eyes as I walked towards the restroom), and at the LES dive where we ended up (where the posse of rhythmically-challenged partiers dropped E, as if that would help their moves). The people I hang with are just too hot to handle.

Yeah, I know you're jealous...

*smooches...feeling pretty, oh so pretty*

fist time I saw that play, and then the movie, and then held the soundtrack in my arms... man I wished for acting abilities so that I could BE Anita. But that didn't work out...

Confidence Level Holding Steady At 7...And Other Musings

I wrote a blog post about my weekend.

Wanna read it?

Here it go:

Movies, Movies And More Movies
Those of you who follow me on Twitter already know- Mari and I spent the ENTIRE SATURDAY at the Georgetown Lowes watching the five movies that were nominated for an Oscar: Milk, The Reader, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire and Frost/Nixon.

The AMC theaters had this promotion- 5 films for $30 plus free, refillable large popcorn. HOW could I pass that up???

And can I just say, this year the Academy nominated five really amazing films (Well, except for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button... that movie sucked ass...). Like for real amazing! Mari and I favored The Reader because it was such a great and touching story, but Slumdog Millionaire was also very good so I'm not mad it won- it was really a tough call.

Monday Musings With 3D Ritmo De Vida, Take 2
I had to cancel last week's show because of technical difficulties, so Michael Tate, band leader of 3D Ritmo De Vida was gracious enough to give it another try tonight.

Make sure you tune in for some good tunes and good conversation.

Confidence Level Holding Steady At 7
Soooo... the infamous reading was on Sunday. And, like you all predicted, it went really well!

I was really nervous- first that I would stumble on my words or fall on stage, and second that no one would like what I had to read. PLUS, the ultimate judge was in the audience... MAMI! So, yeah, I was hella nervous. But I only stumbled on one sentence. I had a lot of people there to show support. And I received really good feedback from the other writers.

Can we say Cloud Nine?

I want to give a special shout out to everyone who trekked out to Harlem to support me in this scary yet exciting leap of faith:

My mami (who didn't say if she liked it or not but hey, she came to support me so I'll take what I can get)

Minnie, who's like my number one cheerleader, and her friends Logan and Dora (and Dora's son Pablo) who also came out and told me they really enjoyed it; that made me smile inside and out.

The lovely blogging ladies, The F$%k It List and ShellyShell who came all the way from Brooklyn, too, and look at the lovely flowers The F$%k It List gave me:

I really almost cried but held back 'cause my mascara wasn't waterproof... I was very touched.

Mari's BFF and proxy, Carol... sweet lil Carol! Thanks so much, nena; I'm so glad you could make it!

The Webmaster, who had a series of train mishaps and missed my reading but stayed anyway, thank you so much for even coming, dude. That meant a lot to me.

All of you, thanks so much for coming out, for your encouraging words of praise and just the love I felt from your presence. I really can't even thank you enough. Now I just have to get through Career Day at Tech on Saturday and I'll be GOLDEN!

Any NYers who missed this reading, there will be another one next month on the Lower East Side, but in the meantime, you can read the story I performed on Sunday here: Enfermos (Part 1)

BTW- My Blow Dryer Broke
So I had to dust off my Mixed Chicks products last week.

Can I just add how depressed I am that my blow dryer is kaput? It's just been a bad month for technology in my house- the blow dryer, the printer, my camera... what the hell?!?! Who sent this bad juju my way? Please take it away, because my computer is a Dell, which means it's shitty upon birth; I don't need it to die altogether!

*smooches...backing up all of my documents like a mofo*
----------
with this computer I understand it's not a matter of if but rather a matter of when. matter of fact, let me back up again... just in case...
